Toyota Avalon owners understand the importance of regular maintenance to keep their vehicles running efficiently. Among these tasks, oil changes play a key role in maintaining engine performance and longevity. Delaying oil changes can increase engine wear, potentially leading to expensive repairs.

Oil Change Procedure

Changing the oil on a Toyota Avalon is a straightforward process that requires basic tools and some preparation. Start by parking the car on a level surface and ensuring the engine is cool to avoid burns. Use ramps or a jack and stands to safely elevate the vehicle, providing access to the oil pan and filter.

Locate the oil drain plug under the engine, and use a wrench to loosen and remove it. Let the old oil drain into a container. During this step, inspect the oil filter, typically near the engine block. Remove the old filter with an oil filter wrench and replace it with a new one, ensuring it fits securely to prevent leaks.

Once the oil has drained completely, reinstall the drain plug and tighten it. Refill the engine with the recommended type and amount of oil, as specified in the owner’s manual. Use a funnel to avoid spills. Start the engine and let it run briefly, checking for leaks around the filter and drain plug.

Resetting Oil Light

After completing the oil change, reset the oil light on the dashboard, which tracks maintenance intervals. Turn on the ignition without starting the engine to activate the vehicle’s electrical systems.

Locate the odometer/trip button on the instrument panel. Hold the button while switching the ignition to the “on” position without starting the engine. Watch the display as the trip meter resets and the maintenance light blinks, indicating the system is recalibrating. After a few moments, the blinking light will turn off, completing the reset process. This ensures the system is ready to track the next oil change interval, helping you stay on top of future maintenance needs.
